? PSOT - Phasor Simulator for Operator Training

Phasor Simulator for Operator Training

Phasor Simulator for Operator Training (PSOT) is phasor based training simulator developed to train operators on the use of synchrophasor technology in real-time operations. PSOT shall facilitate familiarity and acceptance of synchrophasor technologies in control rooms by providing the training that the operators require in using synchrophasor technology. Use of technologies and tools in control rooms enable operators to learn about the technology and how to make use of it in a variety of real life real-time situations.

Components of PSOT

1. Industry standard Power System Simulation Tools to perform event simulations using dynamic models and build a library of system events

  • Off-line Simulation Tools including PSS/GE, PSLF, TSAT/ePMU
  • On-the-fly Simulation Tools including TSAT/ePMU, Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS)

2. RTDMS is used for Visualization to train operators on

  • Event detection and alarming
  • Event diagnostics
  • Event corrective actions and restoration

3. Event Streamer & Manager (ESM)

  • Instructor's user interface
  • Retrieve, stream and play events from the events library

4. enhanced Phasor Data Concentrator (ePDC)

  • Gathers multiple data streams from On-the-fly simulations tools
  • Outputs time-synchronized dynamic event simulation directly to RTDMS as a single data stream

Approaches for PSOT

Event Library Approach

Events are stored in an event library prior to training session. These events may be simulated events from simulation tools like PSS\E, GE PSLF, TSAT etc. or are actual events recorded using synchrophasor data. The library includes separate files for events and event mitigation options that can be used in operator training.

  1. Use off-line simulation tools
  2. Event library consists of simulated and actual recorded events
  3. Event streamer and manager is used to replay events from library to RTDMS
  4. Visualization tool is RTDMS

Real Time Approach

Real-time simulators are used to simulate events in real-time and enable operators/instructors to take actions in real-time to understand effectiveness of actions.

  1. Using on-the-fly simulations tools
  2. Visualization tool is RTDMS

Integration with Operator Training Simulator (OTS)

  • The instructor uses existing OTS and PSOT system simultaneously to simulate events in real-time
  • Enable operators to observe system impact in both traditional SCADA and PSOT Visualization
  • Enables the instructor to train operators on alternative mitigation strategies in real-time to understand the effectiveness of actions
  • Provide side-by-side comparison of EMS using SCADA Visualization and Phasor technology using PSOT Visualization

Uses of PSOT

  • Train Operators on the use of Synchrophasors

  • Train Operators on the use of Synchrophasors

    • Use of the advanced power system metrics e.g., phase angles, sensitivities, oscillations
    • Understand the early warning indicators and event pre-cursors for events over a wide-area such as the entire Interconnection that have the potential to cascade, e.g., wide-area phase angle differences
    • Detect an event and identify the type of event based on signatures. Then locate the region and source of the event
    • Take corrective action to reduce the damage and prepare for next contingency
    • Test alternate operator actions and consequences in a training environment
    • Correct over voltage, over frequency and other problems that may arise while taking corrective actions
  • Show More

  • Testing

  • Enable operators to test alternative actions after events to gain firsthand experience with actions that are most effective for different types of grid events
  • Historical Events Training

  • Enable training using historical events, simulated events and real time simulations
  • Develop Policies

  • Help in the development of policies and procedures for use in real time operations
  • Integration

  • Integrate with existing utility and ISO simulators and tools

About EPG

Electric Power Group, LLC (EPG) has been pioneering the development and deployment of synchro-phasor technologies since 2000. Our principals have extensive experience in running and managing utility grids, investigating root causes of major blackouts (WECC 1996, EI 2003), and leveraging this deep domain knowledge to develop industry leading synchrophasor technology applications for wide area real time monitoring, visualization and situational awareness.

The EPG team has extensive hands-on experience with synchrophasor standards, networks, system architecture, deployments and performance analysis through work at EPG for leading ISO's and utilities including PJM, NYISO, ERCOT, CAISO, MISO, BPA, TVA, SCE, AEP, LADWP, SRP, Duke, Dominion, NYPA and other companies.
