Real Time Dynamics Monitoring System
Phasor-RTDMS® (Real Time Dynamics Monitoring System) is a synchrophasor software application for providing real time, wide area situational awareness to Operators, Reliability Coordinators, Planners and Operating Engineers, as well as the capability to monitor and analyze the dynamics of the power system.
Investigations into major blackouts concluded that the availability of real time, wide area situational awareness was critical for reliability operations. Phasor-RTDMS addresses this critical need.
RTDMS has been designed and built specifically for working with high resolution time synchronized data. The system provides visualization and monitoring of system dynamics.
Phasor-RTDMS has evolved into a robust platform for synchrophasor applications. The system is now in its sixth version, incorporating extensive industry feedback, research outcomes, and real world user experiences from field testing.
RTDMS provides critical metrics of grid dynamics, like
- Phase Angle Differences (Grid Stress)
- Small Signal Stability (Oscillations & Damping)
- Frequency Instability
- Generation-Load Imbalance
- Power-Angle Sensitivity
- Power-Voltage Sensitivity
Traditional SCADA/EMS systems provide static estimations derived from model based computations. On the other hand Phasor-RTDMS provides situational awareness, and grid dynamics through actual sub-second, measurements. For example, the model based estimations during the 1996 WECC Breakup, estimated/predicted a steady state. However, using phasor measurements negatively damped oscillations were revealed – which is what had happened leading to the breakup.
